During my Communication MFA at the Royal College of Art, I developed an interest in speculative fiction and blurring the line between fact and fiction. That interest manifested in my Independent Research Project, A Memoir from the Staircase, a journal belonging to Clive Simmonds, a 63-year-old widower from Margate who finds himself trapped in an endlessly looping section of the Covent Garden Station staircase. The narrative is presented through writing, illustrations, scribbled notes, torn pages, found objects from both before and after his entrapment, two scented elements, and the wear and tear of the journal itself. While I wanted the project to utilize my illustration skills, I believe that allowing the audience to primarily visualize the unending staircase for themselves maintains the mystery of the staircase while supporting the journal’s parafictional nature. Beyond the journal itself, I also tore out pages and left letters from “Clive” in the actual staircase, bringing his story directly into contact with those climbing or descending the staircase.
