Written by Mexican novelist and screenwriter Laura Esquivel, “Like Water for Chocolate” follows the story of a young girl named Tita, who longs for her beloved, Pedro, but can never have him because of her mother’s strict adherence to a family tradition: the youngest daughter cannot marry, but must instead care for her mother until she dies. Tita is only able to express her repressed feelings for Pedro through her cooking, which directly influences the emotions of those who consume it. In this book wrap, created for an Illustration elective, I wanted to convey the relationship between love and food through the layout by placing Pedro and Tita physically apart, yet linked by the food on the table.
